2nd year of master Structural and Fuctional Biochemistry
Our objective is to give you a solid, thorough training in the art of thinking: clear reasoning, critical analysis, deciphering complex subjects, and techniques such as conveying your thoughts accurately.
Our goal is to produce graduates with detailed knowledge of molecular mechanisms in Biology applied to pharmacology, structural biology, cellular biophysics or biotechnology.
Graduating students will thereby gain an unique perspective on biological problems through their contribution to scientific research projects.

[u]Technological workshop[/u]
Students will follow lectures and practicals on cutting-edge techniques. A list of 5 categories of techniques is proposed: molecular biology, structural biology of macromolecules, metabolomics, proteomics and biophysics. Student will be asked to choose 3 of these and will receive 50 hours of practical and lectures of each. This will allow students to adapt their formation to their professional goals.
Students will receive theoretical and technical training on most commonly used in the following fields:
- Molecular biology: study of the different methods used in molecular biology, This module willbe mainly based on the analysis of "Matherial and Methods" of recently published papers, Student will be asked to find alternatives methods and to discuss results.
- Biophysics: super-resolution fluorescence microscopy, Small-angle X-ray scattering, calorimetry, circular dichroism, electron microscopy, atomic force microscopy (AFM), analytic ultracentrifugation.
- Proteomics: Ionization modes (ESI, MALDI), scanning modes (TOF, q-TOF, Orbitrap…), strategies of analysis (bottom-up, top-down/middle-down), study of postraductional modifications of proteins and interactomes using mass spectrometry, informatics data treatment.
- Structural biology of macromolecules: 2D and 3D NMR; X-ray crystallography, electronic microscopy, molecular modelization.
- Metabolomics: This course covers modern research on metabolism and is orientated to systems approaches in metabolic research. As well as acquiring an in-depth understanding of modern principles in metabolism, students will develop skills in methods (metabolomics, fluxomics) to investigate metabolism at the system level

[u]Thematic Workshop[/u]
This teaching unit will depend on the professional project of each student:
- For students aiming at pursuing their studies by a PhD degree, students will have to create a thesis project starting from 3 to 4 published papers on a specific theme. These themes will be related to the main topics of the master (Structural Biology, Proteomics, Biophysics, Metabolomics, Molecular Biology...) and will change every year. Each student will have to create a thesis project under the supervision of teachers and researches specialised in the domain. The thesis project will be evaluated according the rules of the Doctoral School of Toulouse ""BSB"" (10 minutes of presentation and 15 minutes of questions).
- For students whose project is to apply for a job as an engineer in a technological facility (proteomic or metabolomic) or in industry, the content will focus on practical courses covering the complete metabolomic or proteomic workflow thanks to access to Toulouse facilities' modern equipment. Students will have to produce reports on these practical works. Students will also have to prepare literature-based reviews on specific topics selected from their internship projects and to assist to seminars on metabolomics or proteomics.

[u]Statistics and knowledge of companies[/u]
Basic courses describing the organization and management of companies.
All students will receive 10 hours of formation on statistics applied to biology.
Another part will be devoted to fictive job interviews (individual trainings with a professional from human resources).

Students will participate to a scientific project, by taking part to a research program or by contributing to a technological development using innovative instruments devoted to structural biochemistry. The internship could be realised either in a public lab or in a company, in France or abroad.
At the end of the training, strudents will have to present their projects and results through a written report and on oral presentation.

Savoir-faire et compétences

- Represent the structure of biomolecules (proteins, lipids, nucleic acids, carbohydrates ...), to deduce their physico-chemical and biological properties, to predict intra- and inter-molecular interactions;
- Recognize and analyze the main metabolic pathways and their interconnections;
- Use and adapt molecular genetics and genomics / transcriptomics technologies for the study and the modification of microorganisms;
- Design and implement an experimental strategy to answer a research question or test a scientific hypothesis
- Conduct a project alone or with a team
- Interpret and model experimental results using mathematical, statistical and / or computer tools and querying the data banks of protein and nucleotide sequences and structures;
- Write and present in English (oral and written) a scientific project or report of a bibliographic or experimental research activity.
